HOUSE FACTS

  • Square footage for this eleven room house is around 3,750 on one level, featuring three bedrooms, two baths, two working fireplaces, living room, dining room, kitchen, den and pantry. The entire upstairs could be finished into additional living space. And, as one can see from the pictures, these added upstairs rooms could have high ceilings.
  • Inside, one will find mostly heart of pine wood---ceilings, walls and floors. This is not a drywalled home full of "made in China" fixtures. Again, it's a homeplace---not a McCastle.
  • We installed a new roof this year and it took 65 squares (1 sq. is 10'X10'). This gives an indication of the large footprint of this house.

FEATURES

  • Three garages, a recording studio and storage aplenty.
  • The home is also interesting because of its redundant systems of water and heat. It can be heated by wood, natural gas, LP gas, and electricity. The property has springs and a well, in addition to county water. It even has two septic tanks for separate parts of the house.
  • There is a  genuine rock cottage on the property that could be used for a studio or office. Predating the home, it was constructed by Italian rock masons from local rock somewhere in the 1920's and 30's. These craftsmen did a lot of work in this area during that time period, including Berry College in Rome.
  • The house was originally covered with traditional lapped board siding. The second owner added 12" wide cedar boards vertically and turned the house to a reverse board and batten house. About ten years later he added vinyl siding that remains on the house currently.
  • Across 411 from our home is a 22,000 acre wildlife management area and some beautiful mountains.

BEST USE

  • Though this has been our home (where we raised our five children) this property does have commercial potential as well, perhaps  as a restaurant, bed and breakfast or antique store. (We have had a few inquiries concerning this recently.) This is made possible because a modern manufacturing/warehousing facility has recently been built just across the highway. Local officials have indicated that they might be open to commercial zoning for this property as well, which would make it a real estate bonanza!

  • Two neighboring homes have recently sold as residential property at just under $800,000.
LOCATION

Situated on 4.5 acres with pecan and fruit trees and a shimmering front yard lake, this beautiful rural estate is about 20 miles north of Marietta, near the northern outer edge of metropolitan Atlanta. Exit off I-75 at Highway 411, then travel only 4 short miles up the road and just past the town of White. It's on the left and you'll be hardpressed to miss it. Shinall Rd is the little road that borders the southern edge of the property.

Nestled in a valley rimmed by mountains, it is one of the most recognizable homes in Georgia, commanding the attention and admiration of all travelers who pass this way.
Work in Atlanta? You can drive into the city, or even to the airport, without ever seeing a traffic light until you are almost there. When the workday is over, and you're in your car heading home, let your mind unwind as you contemplate what awaits you in your very own "place by the lake."

Feeling a little stressed? Try bagging a few bass before supper. It's the perfect therapy for those with a demanding job.
